Submitted to the Marshall Independent To the editor: By now people are well aware of the looming deficit to our state's biennium budget. In 2006 there was nearly a $2 billion surplus. Decisions by the current leadership of the House of representatives have now left us facing a projected $6 billion deficit. Many would say, "How could we get ourselves into this mess?" I would like to offer an alternative. The history of the United States has proven time and again that out of difficult times come great things. From the greatest generation of WWII to the brave civil servants of 9/11, in difficult times good people have stepped forward to answer the call. Hard work, resourcefulness and the willingness to make the tough decision has always been the quality of a great leaders. This is what we need right now for our state. I am proud to know one of these people, Jay Backer. Jay has worked hard in his community to create jobs through his business and serve through his many volunteer roles. I used to represent parts of Swift and Big Stone counties and have known Jay Backer over 12 years and have come to know Jay as a man of character, hard work and strong traditional family values. Jay is one of the few people in this state who is willing to set aside his current life to serve the voters in this great state. From our conversations I know he has the right perspective and vision for Minnesota. Jay has a fondness for western Minnesota, his community and I know he will defend your interests if given the opportunity. Jay Backer will fight to keep the vacancies in the Appleton private prison filled with Minnesota inmates. He won't support burdensome tax increases on farmers and small business owners, and he won't support new taxes on heating oil and home mortgages like out current House leadership has recently fought to pass. Jay is also someone who believes rural schools and nursing homes ought to be equitably funded out of the current money the state spends on these budget items. Jay's leadership will be welcomed at the State Capitol as we all must step forward and resolve the large task before us. I urge your support of Jay Backer on Nov. 2. Torrey Westrom State Rep.
